In 2022, Domus Bibliotheca was transformed from the library of the Faculty of Law into a new arena for debate and dissemination of research for the University of Oslo. Domus Bibliotheca is located in the west wing of the historical central buildings on Universitetsplassen (University Square). Upon completion of the restoration, the art collection of the University of Oslo and Kunstnerforbundet entered a collaboration to develop the public art project in the building. The neoclassical design of the interior points backwards in time towards ideals promoting knowledge and reason. The new artworks that unfold within this architecture can be seen in relation to the mindset of the past, but at the same time be a stepping stone to the pressing social issues of our time. The artists' free exploration of materials and craftsmanship takes us into a visual world rich in stories and meanings.

We welcome you to the mini-seminar organized by the art collection of UiO and Kunstnerforbundet.

Torbjørn Kvasbø (b. 1953) is a Norwegian ceramist living in Venabygd, Gudbrandsdalen. His work is characterized by a highly developed artistic understanding of ceramics as a material and as language.

Experimentation and physical action with material, shape, texture and color defines Kvasbø's practice. He works in large formats, often developed in connection with the environment in which the objects are to function.

Since the 2000s, Kvasbø has produced a series of ceramic sculptures that he calls Stacks (Stakker). Extruded clay pipes serve as the supporting element in these. Three of the stacks are now installed in the new debate arena of Domus Bibliotheca.

Kvasbø quickly established an international career after graduating from the Bergen Academy of the Arts in 1978. He has held professorships and taught at a number of art institutions in the Nordics, the USA and China. His works have been purchased by museums and collections in Norway and abroad. He is currently president of the International Academy of Ceramics.

Aslaug M. Juliussen (b. 1953, Lodegat/Lødingen, Nordland) is a Sámi artist who works with sculpture and installation with the main emphasis on textiles and materials from reindeer herding, such as antlers, bones, leather and hair. Textiles, fibers and animal skin are materials that evoke bodily experiences related to protection, covering and security. Materiality is Juliussen's starting point for creating new perspectives. Time-consuming techniques are an important aspect of her work, where slow and meticulous handwork is a tribute to nature, materials and traditions. Through repetition, deconstruction and reverence, the artist wants to see the materials in a new context.

In the spring of 2023, Juliussen showed the exhibition ieš guhtenai sierranassii / hver og en av dem for seg / each and every one of them on their own in the Skylight Hall at Kunstnerforbundet. The art collection of University of Oslo has purchased two works from Juliussen's eight-piece installation Várddus – Vy – View III that was shown in the exhibition. The works are large, textile forms composed of triangular, embroidered textile pieces "sewn" together with birch sticks. On the opposite side, the visible fastening threads form a floss. Hanging on opposite sides of the room in Domus Bibliotheca, the textile shapes are in dialogue with each other and the audience.
